I'd feel a bit weird (but flattered) if you introduced me as having done something awesome, but I feel a bit exposed or unusual if you introduce me using option 1. Something to be careful of, certainly.Trishahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11486870702929760981noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-90440057274722849.post-46226469792407091862014-03-02T00:23:56.790+00:002014-03-02T00:23:56.790+00:00Hi Trisha, I've been mulling this over on and ...Hi Trisha, I've been mulling this over on and off since you posted it. I think there's something to this. My hunch is that it has to do with being singled out, even if in a positive way, for something about who or what you are (as opposed to something you've done, say, an accomplishment). Being singled out raises this notion that there is a GROUP and that you are OTHER. Consider the difference between being introduced (hypothetically) in these different ways: 1) "This is Trisha, that rare commodity, one of our top female developers" or 2) "This is Trisha, who gave that great talk at the JUG last week." I would guess that #1 would make you feel uncomfortable, as if receiving an odd, backhanded comment. I also suspect that this has nothing to do with what you might be wearing. If so, then maybe it means that people should learn that singling somebody out, no matter how well intentioned, carries the risk of backfiring.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-90440057274722849.post-81165286785227188582014-02-18T21:43:07.037+00:002014-02-18T21:43:07.037+00:00What's to worry about? I've read a number of things lately on this subject, so when I had this experience, I thought I'd post about how it feels - I wanted to highlight that it's not always about the big, negative events, and it's not even necessarily about being female, but that pretty much anyone can feel uncomfortable in certain circumstances.Trishahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11486870702929760981noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-90440057274722849.post-20839019725584525962014-02-12T15:15:39.218+00:002014-02-12T15:15:39.218+00:00I completely agree!I completely agree!Trishahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11486870702929760981noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-90440057274722849.post-46595232456026140942014-02-11T16:05:35.657+00:002014-02-11T16:05:35.657+00:00Interesting coincidence that Martin Fowler has pos...Interesting coincidence that Martin Fowler has posted "AlienatingAtmosphere" today: http://martinfowler.com/bliki/AlienatingAtmosphere.html.

Nigelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10826219818302312878noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-90440057274722849.post-71437248133192513882014-02-11T13:59:53.369+00:002014-02-11T13:59:53.369+00:00+1 to "don't think too much".
